Cristiano Perricone Visual Artist

Bio

After graduating in Scenography from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 2003, in Maestro Gaetano Castelli’s class, in 2005 I obtain my master’s degree in Television Direction (NUCT) at Cinecittà Studios. I thus begin to collaborate with film and television productions, covering various roles in directing and writing. In 2006, I sign my first television direction and collaborate as a creative with various communication agencies between Rome and Milan. The following year I win the first prize at the MTV Italian Video Revolution.

Entertainment and communication become part of my professional life, inevitably influencing my artistic production. I begin experimenting with different languages, finding my favourite media in video and Site Specific installations.

In my first exhibitions I present my works related to set design; in 2011 I participate in the artistic residency “De-Industria”, winning first prize with the work “L’origine delle macerie”.

In 2013, I organise my first solo exhibition in Rome, presenting the cycle of works from the ‘Macerie’ series for the first time.

Since 2016, I’m co-founder of Brodo Studio, a communication and experiential marketing agency based in Udine that reflects the philosophy and interdisciplinary approach inherent in the world of entertainment, combining visual art, storytelling, performance and communication strategy.

The creative process

My artistic production involves multiple media and disciplines. Usually in the creative phase, there are recurring steps in both the design and realisation of the works, techniques and activities add up and overlap, revealing a common methodology.

I always start from observation rather than intuition, I almost never look for the astonishment or effect given by a particular medium; I am convinced that the medium itself or the technology that supports it should never be placed above the message or the content itself. The selection of a subject/theme and its spatial and temporal re-composition are the prerogatives of my creative process, even when I use electronic or digital technology to support it.

Each of my works therefore starts with an exploratory or discovery part in which the subject/theme is created or brought to light: these are sculptures, sketches, magnetic tapes, VHS, photographs, 3D scans. In the next step, the material is measured, or rather recorded, during the fragmentation phase, whether physical or digital. Finally, the re-composition takes place, the modelling of the material into a new form.

The concept of cinematic montage is fundamental to my artistic practice: I use it not only to combine and organise images, but also to create a visual narrative that develops over time, in a non-linear, multiple and simultaneous manner. In this way, the visual work or installation takes on a broader dimension from a narrative point of view, presenting itself not as a unitary solution but more as a series of visual sequences.

Ogni opera è un invito a porsi delle domande sul posizionamento del punto di osservazione e sulle modalità in cui ci relazioniamo con l’opera.

The other recurring aspect is the fragmentation of the work, which often also occurs physically: through this process I try to interrupt the classical relationship between viewer and narrator by trying to overturn it or replace it with other dynamics. The destabilisation of points of view, the alteration of narrative time, the superimposition of visual memories with fragments of ‘live’ reality are all part of the process of re-composing a work.
